Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. Founding partner Juan Sierva nearly 700 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvedre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
It's nicely fragrant on the nose showing raspberry, dark plum, blueberry and floral aromas, leading to a juicy and lively palate that displays attractive fruit intensity, backed by elegantly drying tannins. Made from organically grown monastrell (90%) and syrah (10%). At its best: now to 2016.
Organically grown fruit, 90% Monastrell and 10% Syrah from "˜Campos de Riscar, Jumilla, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine bottled without oak maturation. Dark, deep, black-red colour with some bricking on rim. The bouquet is bright and aromatic with lifted, primary, ripe dark cherry and raspberry fruits, along with red florals, pepper and a little plum jam. Medium-full bodied, this has a deep and well-concentrated core of ripe black berry fruits with raspberry, plum jam and peppery flavours. The fruit is encased by good tannin extraction and grip, providing a balanced mouthfeel and structure. Discreet acidity enlivens the mouthfeel and along with the tannins, carry the wine to a long, firmly packed finish of black fruits. This is a wellconcentrated Jumilla with ripe black fruits and balanced structure and grip. Match with slow-cooked game meat over the next 4-5 years.
